I guess camera manufacturers feel that their own proprietary RAW formats give them some kind of edge over the competition.

Frankly, it really does not.

I think that one day a single RAW format will be used by all manufacturers. Just as JPEG has been standardized as a capture mode.

And that would really be ideal.
