As far as I know only Nikon i standing out against the Adobe RAW (DNG) format.
This is a publically documented format and has been adopted by Hassleblad. All other formats (except Nikon) can be converted into DNG's. This is great for those of us who use photoshop, but maybe less so for those using other programmes.
However there is nothing to stop open source developers using the DNG format, so at least Adobe arn't forcing us (as per microsoft) to use their software.
I use a Canon 10D and I have never used the Canon supplied software, since the DNG convertor became avalible. I convert and archive all my RAW files into DNG's.
I suggest the campaign should also encourage other software developers (open source or propriatory) to adopt the DNG, Nikon will be forced to follow.

Maybe it would be a good idea to create a open source NEF -> DNG converter. Should be pretty easy using dcraw as base.

The DNG Converter already supports the following Nikons:

D1
D1H
D1X
D100
D2H
D70
Coolpix 5000
Coolpix 5400
Coolpix 5700
Coolpix 8700

The problem is the later ones such as D2X where Nikon appears to handle the WB in a strange way. According to an Adobe forum, the DNG Converter will eventually support it, but without "as shot" WB.

I don't believe either Canon or Nikon actually support DNG. I believe it was done without their help.

Matthias: I think having a second-source converter to DNG would be a good idea. It is always a bit worrying to rely on one company, especially when some people are suspicious about Adobe. And the Adobe converter only runs on Mac & Windows.
