I would happily concede to people using Adobe DNG though. I don't see why there needs to be a campaign for open raw image formats when Adobe created an almost perfect one, based on TIFF.

Yes, a robust format that's agreed upon would be better than simply documenting. Documenting is way better than nothing, but single future-oriented format is far better. Otherwise, you still have a giant pain in the ass in terms of writing software to retrieve the data.
