Manufacturers should realise that its in their best interests to move towards an open standard. If the last few decades of computing have taught us anything, it is that the "closed" standards have been rejected by most consumers.

Publishing the RAW file specifications is the first step towards ensuring that everyone from multi-billion dollar software developers to university students can contribute in the development of products which deliver a seamless experience for consumers. IT also brings down the cost of development of these products.

Better/more enjoyable experience in using cheaper and more widely used products will translate into more sales for the manufacturers.
