OpenRAW

Today I allready have trouble with Canon's own "Lineup", since I have an issue opening the CRW and CR2 files that reside on my computer. It seems that not all files I have can be opened by my favorite software at the same time.
Either I install RAW's on separate computers to be able to open CRW (PowershotPro1)and CR2 (20D) files.
I guess this 'll get worse over time after owning other camera's as well.
Results from DPP are inferior to PS, but I'm limited to PSE or others due to costs. If there were good documentation and openness about RAW then amateurs like me would also be able to get the best of their pictures with the software they can afford. And even be able to save it over time to ensure that their children whose photo's were taken can look at them in the future.
