DNG is a great idea but has limited support by only a few software companies. Camera manufacturers aren't adopting it. DNG still misses key EXIF data hidden in secret makernotes. Adobe recommend archiving both the original raw and a DNG conversion.

This is simply politics; Adobe are now competitors. To save face camera manufacturers will argue their raw file formats contains hidden features that only their software can unlock.

The OpenRaw argument is very different. Rather than ask manufacturers to adopt someone else's file format they claim limits their technology, they should fully document their own raw file formats. We need to know our images will be accessible in the future at the highest possible quality.

Actually, that's no longer true. While the first version of DNG could not also embed a copy of the original proprietary raw file, the current version allows you to save not ONLY a DNG file but embed the complete original raw file inside the DNG. File sizes to get bigger, but the advantage is that it's a truely archival format now.

And with Camera Raw 3+ (Photoshop CS2) you can endbed ALL your additional metadata right in the DNG without using side car files.

DNG is better than many think. . .
