Radu: Yeah, this entire RAW capture is interesting.

A few years ago, each manufacturer decided it needed a RAW format. They spent thousands of man hours to develope that. A lot of money.

Eventually, everyone had a RAW format. By then, it was no big deal.

But somehow, the manufacturers remember when it was a big deal and just cannot seem to let go of their data.

One day they will wake up and realize that it offers no competitive advantage at all. And it's not worth developing any more RAW formats.

Someone will develop a RAW capture format that's ideal and all manufacturers will just use that.

My prediction, anyway.

Actually, the raw *format* that most use could be designed in 10 minutes on the back of a napkin. OK, maybe 20 minutes. But it is a pretty straightforward format; a flexible format takes much longer to develop, but a one-camera simple one takes very little. Now, the RAW processing is a massive undertaking indeed, but no one is asking them to open their processing algorithms, just the format.
