Open formats allow progress and consumer choice -- would the Web be as World-Wide if it was based on proprietary formats? Closed formats smack of arrogance on the part of vendors, who foolishly put short-term profits from their temporary lock-in of customers at a higher priority than long-term consumer satisfaction and health of the field in general. Some of the problem may be attributed to expediency rather than intentional (and detrimental to the end user) competition, but I think it would be naive to think that this is the main reason, considering how much time has passed since RAW formats started to emerge. The DNG format is a step in the right direction, but I am not convinced it is a complete solution.
