the image data in the file belongs to...

the image data in the file belongs to the photographer. The file format is no different, in that respect, than any other file format. With TIF or JPG files, the photographer is free to choose any editor he desires, because those file formats have standards. The same should apply to the RAW file formats. The photographer should be just as free to choose an editor for RAW as he is with the other formats.
