Open standards are were we´re headed...

Open standards are were we´re headed for numerous reasons, by making RAW files open format:

1. manufacturers take the burden out of trying to figure out how to layout raw files. this can be handled by a larger body and they can just provide input on what they think.
2. open standards leads to better software for RAW files, it benefits the consumer because we have better RAW converters to choose from.
3. genericity, if all RAW files are written in the same way, you can easily apply the same decoding algorithm to decode it, no need to write numerous different decoding algorithms. its a no-brainer for software design.
4. performance can be greatly improved, outside sources can find ways to improve compression and offer suggestions on how to tweak the format for optimal space usage.
