If you consider the data files created...

If you consider the data files created by a digital camera to be equivalent to a film negative (or positive, in the case of slides) then what, exactly, is the corresponding equivalent of undocumented raw file formats? There is no equivalent except, possibly, the use of slightly different film sizes or slide mounts . . . and even that is a stretch. Why is it, then that manufacturers are afraid of losing control or some sort of "competitive advantage" if they release the raw file format? (Other than basic greed spawned by the photographer needing to purchase "approved" software or issues that arise from the manufacturer's "need" to have "control" of the photographer's output?)

ALL data files created by digital cameras to store the photographic "image" should be as accessible to the photographer as today's film negatives and positives are!
