In my mind documentation is not enough. An error in the docs, intentional or otherwise, can set back the user community for 6-12 months if it is reduced to silicon. The only long term answer is a standards body that is independent. Just like IEEE in the computer and networking fields. DSLRs are electronic devices, so why not shoot for something like an IEEE standards committee?
