Openly documented RAW file formats give the users of free and open-source operating systems the ability to use these files.
Currently consumers wishing to do digital imaging are limited to a very few operating systems because they are the only ones supported by the major hardware and software companies.
Free and open source operating systems such as Linux are being used with great efficiency in the graphic design and feature film industries. The benefits of these powerful and stable operating systems running on low-cost computer hardware can be available to individuals as well, but their use is often limited because of proprietary and secret device drivers and file formats.
Greater diversity in software and operating systems benefits all computer users because it leads to greater competition and therefore more innovation.
