In the days of Shooting film or slides there was no problem accessing your images 5,10 or 50 years from now. That should be the case for digital negatives.

The key word here should be your images not the camera companies images. I think it is reasonable to expect shooters to be able to access their images when ever and where ever they want without having to rely on proprietary software to do it.
