A digital file from the camera is the equivalent of a negative or a chrome. Sure, the manufactures of film used various proprietary means to do so, but the end result was that the data that composed your image--the recorded image--was open to use for any purpose simply by shining a light through it. A digital RAW file should have the equivalent use characteristics. I'm all for camera makers using proprietary techniques to craft their cameras and the electronics in them. But the result--the image--should be always available for me to use. Just like film has been.
