because I own the copyright to my images and I do not appreciate anyone claiming their proprietary data is part of my creation.

Beyond that, open formats foster competition in the realm of RAW conversion allowing users more choices and the ability to get the tools that meet their needs rather than what some corporation tells them their needs are.

Personally I have no issues with formats being unique for each manufacturer so long as they are documented so that users with the appropriate programming skills can access the data. Software development kits (SDKs) do not qualify there.

In the end, these tools are made to enable users creativity and non-open document formats prevent users from having full control of their creations.
