As a Nikon/Photoshop user, I am very disappointed with the stance taken by both companies, but particularily Nikon. Seems like Nikon should learn from the Apple/PC wars of a few years ago. Apple kept their system proprietary. Even though they "owned" the computer world, in a few short years they were reduced to an afterthought in the industry. Nikon, if you make it difficult to use your fine hardware I suspect the marketplace will move to other fine products and you will be in the same situation as Apple.
