Please leave your own statement under the headline "We are for openly documented RAW file formats because..." here. en We need reliability & choice. Let your camera be your competitive advantage, not your formats http://openraw.org/node/1551
We need reliability in the images WE record...we need to be sure we can still access/read/convert/process/print these images 50 yrs later.

We need choice & a free market. I don't necessarily want to use the camera maker's RAW processing s.w...which may disappear someday anyhow, or stop being available on my operating system of choice, etc. They shouldn't close-off the free-market of processing s.w.

Camera-makers should compete on the merits of their hardware, not use file-formats to seek competitive advantage or monopolies.
http://openraw.org/node/1551#comment We are for openly documented RAW file formats because... Thu, 01 Mar 2007 01:58:19 +0900 edmundronald 1549 at http://openraw.org Converting current RAW images to Open RAW http://openraw.org/node/1548
Please pardon my ignorance if this has been covered somewhere and I just didn't notice it.

I was wondering if there's anything in the works as far as software for converting existing RAW images into an open format? An open format right from the camera would obviously be great, but it does nothing to solve the problem of aging RAW files that may lose support in the future.

I don't know what kind of technical problems exist for this kind of software, but it seems to me that it could be made as a batch processing plugin for UFRaw. Add in the ability to do lossless compression and you'd have something that's quite practical for backup purposes.

http://openraw.org/node/1548#comment We are for openly documented RAW file formats because... Mon, 11 Dec 2006 04:05:01 +0900 crea7or 1542 at http://openraw.org What is the real issue? http://openraw.org/node/1538
I am definitively for an open RAW format, or standard, but there are a couple of things I do not really understand. What is the real issue/surpise/betrayal?

Any computer file format, or any data format for that matter, is by nature a transient format. As technology evolves some formats will die, others will be adopted. That is just the way it is.
No matter how much you loved 8-tracks, all your Lynerd Skynerd tapes went the way of the Do-Do, unless you care for them enough to keep the old AMPEX dinosaur working. The same thing happened to all the Spy vs. Spy video games that I had on 5.25 floppy disks. I know that probably one day I'll have to keep some old software running just to have access to all my RAW files, and I have no problem with that issue.

http://openraw.org/node/1538#comment We are for openly documented RAW file formats because... It's a pretty serious looking machine, so hopefully Nikon and Canon will finally capitulate and give up their proprietary undocumented RAW formats. Once one falls, the rest are sure to follow.

I hope.
http://openraw.org/node/1535#comment We are for openly documented RAW file formats because... Sun, 17 Sep 2006 10:50:31 +0900 danag42 1535 at http://openraw.org Shoudn't OpenRAW format be created by independent developers? http://openraw.org/node/1528
Hi all! I prefer to make all raw formats open, but... shouldn't independent developers create a new, open raw format? I think that OpenRAW (as organisation) should create such format and then promote it to camera manufacturers. Until manufacturers will use it, there should be converters from current raw formats to universal OpenRAW file format (without loosing any data), and plugins to all softwares like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP.
This file format should be extensible, universal to various ccd's, etc.

Otherwise, camera manufacturers will never create one, unified file format - maybe they will use DNG, which is not open.

http://openraw.org/node/1528#comment We are for openly documented RAW file formats because... If the 'RAW' format of that camera is patented, I would assume that the 'purchase price' of the camera acts as license for me to use that patented technology for it's intended purpose, ie: to take photos in that format and process as I see fit.

Now - if the camera manufacturer encrypts that data, then aren't they preventing me from manipulating or accessing my own copyrighted material - material that I created, and that I own the rights to? Surely the DMCA and ESPA cannot be enforced when you are trying to access your own copyright material?

http://openraw.org/node/1489#comment We are for openly documented RAW file formats because... Just want to introduce myself and exclaim how anxious I am to learn about "raw shooting". My gear is the "Oly" EVOLT E-500 and the "Nikon D-70s". I am an amateur but enthusiastic photographer.

I use "Adobe" and "Corel" and "Oly" software as well as the Nikon stuff (which seems lacking and has a high learning curve).

I have a good machine, 3.0 gigs RAM, 3.8 gigs clock and 500 gigs HD on a 22" CRT monitor. My OS is WIN XP (SP2) 64 bit processor and my printer is a "Canon" 19900 wide format.

I'll be back soon to learn more.

http://openraw.org/node/1485#comment We are for openly documented RAW file formats because...
