Not everybody may see the advantages of RAW formats by now, but in a few years, RAW formats will be perfect "digital negatives" with wide color depths and a lot of quality reserves in lights and shadows. Unfortunately these RAW files could become worthless if the camera manufacturer is insolvent or just stops supporting older camera types in newer software. It would be more than unsatisfying if RAW files had an expiration date and all we could store for future use would be a processed 8 bit copy. In analogue times we stored all our negatives - not only the paper prints.
The only safe way to keep the full quality of today's and tomorrow's photographs accessible is a completely open RAW format without any "manufacturer's secrets".

That "completely open RAW format without any "manufacturer's secrets"" is DNG without private data. (I have suggested the name DNG/OpenRAW).

It is available now for anyone to use. We should all be promoting it. There won't be another such format within the next few years.
