We definitely need a standard format...
We definitely need a standard format for RAW images vis-a-vis those found by JPEG/GIF foundation, etc. Standardization is the key to the success of the entire digital photography arena.

That standard format already exists. It is DNG.
It is currently "just" an Adobe specification, but becoming recognised as a format to go for.
OpenRAW objects to the fact that is still has private data fields, but they are not vital, and it would be possible to identify a subset that didn't have this problem. (I have suggested the name DNG/OpenRAW).
Anything less than a single common Raw format is second best.
